What is the Canadian ETA?
The Canadian Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a pre-travel entry requirement introduced by the Canadian government for visa-exempt nationals — including Australians. It is not a visa, but it is just as essential: without one, you won't be allowed to board your flight to Canada.
Applying is straightforward and done entirely online. Your approved eTA is electronically linked to your Australian passport — no physical document is issued. It remains valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, covering as many trips to Canada as you like within that period, with each stay of up to six months.

Do Australians need a Canadian ETA?
Yes — every Australian passport holder flying to or connecting through Canada must hold a valid Canadian eTA before departure. This covers all types of visit: tourism, business, transit, or visiting friends and family. There are no exceptions for short stopovers.
The eTA requirement applies to air travel only. If you are entering Canada by land or sea, different entry requirements apply. Not sure where you stand? Visit ETA Permits and check your eligibility on the application page in seconds.
Good to know: Canada is one of Australia's most popular long-haul destinations — from skiing in Whistler to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Whatever brings you there, your eTA is the first step. Apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute stress before departure.
